Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is bullying?

A: Bullying is when a person, or group of people, uses power -- such as physical, verbal, or social -- to harass or intimidate one or more people who have less power.

Q: Are there methods for resolving conflicts respectfully?

A: Yes, and the key is understanding that confrontation does not cause conflict; it resolves conflict. Avoiding conflict may result in pent-up emotions, unhealthy choices, direct bullying, or social aggression. When used effectively, confrontation can make a friendship stronger by showing the people involved they care enough about the relationship to work through differences.

Q: How do you control emotions and anger to prevent it from turning into bullying?

A: The key is learning to identify and recognize physical cues to determine how to act and react toward others. Using guided visualizations and activities, students learn the connections between their emotions so they can be addressed in a productive manner.

You opened my eyes to the need to take this subject more seriously. I won’t be allowing my students to “joke” in what I now see as a harmful way.
